My email to Pier 1 Imports:

Recent media reports indicate that Pier 1 refuses to permit the sale of poppies in its Canadian stores, saying that corporate policy is to support only two "charities." Naturally that is your right -- your stores are private property, and it is up to you to decide what goes on in them. I am very sorry, though, that you choose to consider the commemoration of our soldiers' sacrifices as a charity. Perhaps, being based in the United States, your company is unaware of the role the poppy plays in Canadian culture. In Canada, the poppy is worn to honour those who served, and particularly those who died in the service. It was adopted as a symbol after the publication of Col. McRae's poem, "In Flanders Fields," during the First World War.

I have shopped at the Pier 1 outlet near my home on many occasions. If your company's attitude toward our veterans does not change, I will be compelled to exercise my right to shop elsewhere.
