These types of politicians choose advisors based on their beliefs vs. ability.

I always make a careful distinction between disagreements in policy and incompetence. I disagreed with many (but not all) of Margaret Thatcher's policies, but I respected the thought process she used to reach them (except for the poll tax). You could see cogent, coherent policy at work. Ditto for Reagan or Blair or Mitterrand for that matter.

At first, when Bush started doing weird things, I gave him the benefit of the doubt. His "master plan" will become apparent later, I thought. Well it is now later and it is clear he had no plan. No plan in the economic front aside from a one-time tax-break. No plan in the political front in Iraq aside from the one time strike on Baghdad. No plan in the Israeli peace processes where things have developed to the detriment of Israel as recently pointed out by no less than the head or the Israeli armed forces.

All of this is the result of incompetence from Bush and his team of advisors. I realize it is difficult for a party to dump an incumbent but if the republicans don't do so they risk becoming politically unelectable. Look at the Tories in the UK, or the Progressive Conservatives in Canada, or the Socialist party in France, which are still paying the price of sticking with the wrong person for too long.
