Ann, how nice, we meet again.

Just a small observation, to show that I actually read your posts all the way through.

>>...Skoff describes is the eradication of the American middle class — derisively referred to as the "bourgeoisie" by Karl Marx.<<

To Marx, the bourgeoisie owned the means of production (ref Wikipedia). It was certainly not synonymous with "middle class"

The proletariat on the other hand were the wage labourers. They didn't produce anything of their own, but instead sold their labour in order to live.

So in strict labour terms, the vast majority of today's middle class would have to be classified proletarian, rather than bourgeois.

This is actually significant when we are talking about free trade. Were you aware, for example, that the following passage appears in Marx 'n Engels "The Communist Manifesto"

"The bourgeoisie... has reduced personal worth to exchange value, and in place of the numberless indefeasible chartered freedoms, has set up that single, unconscionable freedom — free trade."

Bet you didn't know you are a Marxist at heart!
