Hell, even I'd agree with that. Well, maybe not quite "irrelevant", but highly polarizing and alienating, with shrinking national support. That's the party Pat Buchanan wanted.
As for CA, perhaps Arnold as Gov can swing the state party toward the center. If he can, CA could become a GOP stronghold and influence the national party as well. After all, if you grab the middle in CA, you leave the Dems with SF, Berkeley, and a few pockets like Hollywood and Santa Barbara (is it still "the People's Republic of"?). It becomes the party of Barbara Streisand and becomes irrelevant, while the far right is left to choose between splintering off and becoming irrelevant themselves or working with the middle.
OK, maybe that's a little far-fetched. The middle also likes to have political power somewhat balanced, I think.
