The middle also likes to have political power somewhat balanced, I think.

Gridlock is GOOOOOD. It gets a bad rap, of course, from the pols, but it's good. Each party stops the others bad ideas. And necessary things are necessary, so they get through.

Actually, the national Repub party may be well on its way to irrelevance, just not quite there yet. The nomination and election of Bush is a bad sign in that regard. Owned and operated by the Christian Right.

I'm not sure Santa Barbara ever made "People's Republic" status. Like many other well-to-do, when a measure means their gardeners have to be legal and they have to pay them more and pay SSI and workers' comp, they suddenly lose their enthusiasm for leftish ideas.

HOWEVER, among the People's Republics, we still have Berzerkeley, Santa Cruz, and Santa Monica. Maybe San Francisco. It's so weird it's hard to tell.
