Krauthammer: "Howard Dean wants the white trash vote."

Krugman: Why did Mississippians elect Haley Barbour? "Mississippi voters, unlike their counterparts up north, are still responding to Republican flag-waving - and it's not just the American flag that's being waved." [Krugman plays his own race card - his wife is black - or, as he puts it "African American" - they all think alike, "by and large", it appears to Krugman.]

I suppose what they're really trying to say is that white Southerners, aka rednecks, are too damned dumb to realize that the Democrat party is where their interests lie.

But to me, it's supremely ironic that after decades of the Democrats throwing the race card at Republicans, it's finally backfiring.

How can you simultaneously berate rednecks for being rednecks, and ask for their vote? Add in the growing number of affluent blacks, and you're probably seeing real change in the South. Which is why Dean is trying to figure out how to play the class card without playing the race card.
