Manufacturing employment fell by 24,000, the 39th consecutive monthly drop. Since July 2000, the number of factory jobs is down by nearly 2.8 million, although recent monthly declines have eased substantially.
Last month, the largest payroll gains were in education and health services, which rose by 56,000, retail trade, up 30,000, employment services, up 29,000, and food services and drinking places, which added 23,000 workers
