External Hard Drive problem:

Control panel, device manager, recognizes the external 58 Gig hard drive I have (USB2). It populates the basic info (the red activity light on the drive blinks when accessed for this, so I know it can communicate with computer) in the volume tab of properties. There are no yellow warning icons in the device manager. (WinXP)

"My Computer" does not see it, neither does windows explorer. When they have seen them earlier tonight, it listed it as a removable drive (f:). When clicked on, it asks for me to insert a disk. (??!!) When it worked right, a few days ago, it has been listed in the hard drive section and not as a removable drive.

I don't want to use system restore, because I have removed Virtual CD5 from my system -- finally. I'd hate to have them back. They are diabolically difficult to uninstall.

The external drive's file system is FAT32. My C drive is NTFS. I don't know if that is a problem or not.

I hunted through google for this problem, no returns. I am not sure I still have any HDD docs (they were sparse anyway).

Any help much appreciated.
