Georgia Told to Build Strong Ties to China

In view of the future importance of China's role as a global economic power, Georgia should promote its ties to the world's most populous country through a private-public organization, State Sen. Sam Zamarripa, D-Atlanta, concluded at the end of the third session of the "GeorgiaChina:Future" initiative held in Athens on Nov. 4.

"The scale of dealing with China is bigger than anything we have done before," Mr. Zamarripa said in his final remarks at the University of Georgia event. "The world has changed because of China's accession to the World Trade Organization. We don't know exactly what the future will hold, but we want to be ahead of the curve."

The initiative's organizing committee is to meet on Tuesday to develop its final set of proposals, which are to be presented to the General Assembly when it reconvenes in January.

Besides the most recent Athens event, meetings were held at Georgia State University on Oct. 1 and at the Georgia Ports Authority on Oct. 22.
