[Relief]
Pat,
Just got through reading some 150+ recent posts on this thread. I just find this whole bruhaha about multiple identities etc etc simply ridiculus. I think its time to get back to the real stuff here (I, for one, am ready for some relief!).
As my contribution to getting us back on track, here is a question I have been wondering about, perhaps you or others care to comment. Do you know if there is any effort made by Amati/TI on putting the VDSL code into the C6X? Seems to me this would be a most logical thing for them to do. After the problems and resulting delays on getting an integrated hardware based solution out from MOT for ADSL(CG), wouldn't it be prudent for them to guard against the same thing happenning with NEC's chip solution for VDSL? The beauty of the C6X is that it is a software/firmware based solution. Amati is much more in control with a C6X DSP solution. Once a dependable version of the C6X is out it should be simply a matter of software/firmware development to add VDSL capabilities on top of the earlier ADSL solution.
I am not sure how difficult VDSL is vs ADSL. I think I remembered some earlier discussion mentioning that VDSL is actually simpler to implement because of the shorter distances. If that is the case, it shouldn't be long for AMTX to have a C6X based VDSL modem out soon. What do you think? If C6X is out 10/9, ... ADSL C6X by 11/97 and VDSL by 12/97 or 1/98? Or is this too much to ask?
This question is especially relevant considering the potential for some of contracts going directly for VDSL, bypassing ADSL. We know of HK for one, how many other HK's are there? I understand that some of the more crowded urban areas in Asia and Europe (Siemens?) are amenable to an immediate installation of VDSL without further infrastructure developments by the TELCO's. Didn't Amati (JS at last year's SuperComm?) state that they believe the market for VDSL would be much greater than ADSL?
How's that for some relief from the recent bruhaha?
Just my 2 cents. Looking forward to any comments anybody might have on this.
Regards,
