The Confederate Flag Flap

I haven't said anything about the Howard-Dean/Confederate-flag brouhaha for the same reason I didn't write a word about the Wilson/Plame/leak kerfuffle: It's a story that will be largely irrelevant in the overall 2004 presidential campaign.

However, there's one notable thing about the Confederate flag brouhaha: It illustrates the bizarro world Democrats, especially Dean supporters, live in. The fact that Democrats and Deanie Weenies are even thinking about how Dean could win one or more Southern states is a perfect example of how delusional they've become because of the liberal media cocoon.

Consider the last Democrat presidential candidate. Al Gore, an incumbent vice president and former senator from Tennessee, couldn't carry his home state in 2000. He couldn't win Bill Clinton's home state of Arkansas. He lost the traditional Democratic bastion of West Virginia. In fact, he got shut out entirely, losing every Southern state, even as he won the national popular vote in a period of peace and prosperity.

And now Howard Dean - a liberal, peacenik, tax-raising Vermonter - wants to do what Southern New Democrat Gore couldn't??

Democrat cocooning will serve Republicans well. It's the reason why I predicted the rise of Howard Dean way back in February. And it's the reason why I think a Dean nomination will, barring unforeseen circumstances, create a Republican tidal wave in 2004.
