Bank raises interest rate

The Bank of England decided yesterday to increase the base rate by a quarter point to 3.75 per cent, ending the longest period without an interest rise since the 1940s.

The vote by the Bank's monetary policy committee marked the first increase since February 2000 and is expected to be followed by many more.

The rise ends a remarkable run for the housing market as property prices soared and mortgage repayments dropped.

George Johns, an economist for the Woolwich, said: "After nearly four years of falling base rates, the Bank of England has decided that the party must end before it gets out of hand."

Britain's biggest building society, the Nationwide, wasted no time in raising its mortgage rate, in a move that will be matched by all its rivals. The timing of the bank's decision, just before the Christmas spending spree, means that most people's mortgage repayments will go up for the first time in nearly four years when they can least afford it.

However, the rate rise will please savers who can expect more interest on bank and building society accounts after several years of disappointing returns.
