If you want to change the drug laws, you just need to convince enough of your fellow citizens. Our lawmakers are elected. And our drug laws aren't unique. Most countries have laws restricting drug use.

I only said "the US is one of the freest and most just countries on earth" - I'm not interested in arguing whether it is the "best" or "most just". That would be getting into fine distinctions.

I don't see the lack of freedom to be a legal doper or the relative smaller size of our social welfare safety net (as compared to European countries) as being reasons to despair about my country.

Re. the freedom to suffer - a great deal of suffering in our society occurs as a result of free decisions. Substance abuse (regardless of whether the particular substance is legal or not) almost always imposes some degree of suffering on the individual abuser and his/her family. So does the bearing of children outside of marriage. The US rate of child poverty could be cut dramatically if single parent families were less prevalent.
