Immediately, Mr Bush has put himself at odds with the realities of his "war on terrorism", which relies heavily on the co-operation of a string of autocratic regimes in the Islamic world.

I'm not so sure about that. In order to maintain legitimacy (which would disintegrate eventually) these authoritarian regimes need to be seen as opening up, offering economic opportunity to their youth, and providing an political outlet for social and economic unrest.

But along with that, the US and international community MUST be willing to step up to the plate in order to provide them the support necessary to successfully implement such a transition..

Bottom line.. people will revolt, or fight prevailing authority when they believe their concerns are not being paid attention to. The key is to provide the proper structure for this social dissent to be expressed (media, opposing political parties,.. etc) where alternative views can be expressed and debated. It's the lack of debate that creates the current hopelessness that seems to pervade the lives of many muslims and turns them to militancy.

And again.. we may not be successful. It could be a case of a "day late and dollar short". But it's a battle that we need to fight in order to prevent an even greater clash 5-10 years from now when the pressure is REALLY on in the Muslim world.
