Richard M. Scrushy Names Trial Team to Defend Him on Indictment Filed on Nov. 4 Thomas V. Sjoblom and Abbe David Lowell Co-Trial Counsel In Birmingham, Ala., Case
BIRMINGHAM, Ala., Nov 09, 2003 /PRNewswire via COMTEX - Richard M. Scrushy, the founder and former Chairman and CEO of HealthSouth Corp., today named a team of lawyers who will defend him at his upcoming trial here on the charges filed against him by the federal government on Nov. 4.
Selected as co-trial counsel were Thomas V. Sjoblom of Chadbourne & Parke LLP and his partner, Abbe David Lowell, both of Chadbourne's Washington, D.C., office. Donald V. Watkins of Birmingham will continue to provide valuable counsel and advice.
"I look forward to my day in court where the facts will show I am not guilty," said Mr. Scrushy. "In Abbe Lowell and Tom Sjoblom as my lead trial lawyers, and with Don Watkins continuing as a key advisor, I could not have a better group of lawyers working on my behalf."
"I am pleased that Abbe Lowell, now my partner at Chadbourne, has agreed to join me as co-trial counsel in this historic endeavor of service to my client, one which will prove to be of unprecedented magnitude," said Mr. Sjoblom, who has represented Mr. Scrushy since last April. "Given Abbe's experience and expertise in complex white collar criminal cases, and his sense of teamwork, he is the best lawyer for the role. As a team, I am confident we will be able to prove Richard Scrushy's innocence."
Mr. Lowell added: "In this time where the government is trying to criminalize corporate conduct with too broad a brushstroke, it is especially important to set the record straight with respect to Richard Scrushy's amazing accomplishments in building HealthSouth into one of the country's top companies. This battle started on March 17 when the SEC brought its case and it will not end until we hear the last "not guilty' verdict read by the jury foreperson."
Rounding out the trial team is Arthur Leach, a former assistant U.S. Attorney and chief of asset forfeiture for the U.S. Attorney's office in Georgia from 1989 to 2002. In the same time span, he also served as a high-ranking U.S. Department of Justice official in asset forfeiture enforcement (1992 to 1993), and as Chief of the Organized Crime Strike Force in Atlanta (1998 to 2002). He currently runs his own consulting firm. Continuing to serve as local counsel to Mr. Scrushy in Birmingham will be Lewis Gillis and Raymond Johnson of Thomas, Means, Gillis & Seay, PC.
