if the South would have been comfortable with maintaining their status quo

Maintaining the status quo has never been an option throughout history. Times change. The Civil War began when the minority of southerners who enjoyed the status quo decided to take drastic action. Had it not been secession, it is likely it would have been another drastic action. The north was not happy with the status quo, but it was happy with the trends. History is chaotic and therefore unpredictable, but the prior events seemed to lurch from one desparate compromise to another until none were satisfied with the results.
