David,
I would argue that those American companies should close up shop & return those jobs where they rightfully belong--on U.S. soil. International businesses are merely concerned with their own profits. Their considerations never reach the reality that each nations person on the street must confront daily. The average person needs to earn their daily bread--gigantic companies completely ignore the needs of humanity and instead focus exclusively on that particular business' bottom line. I am not, and have never been, a socialist but I can see first hand the struggle the global economy is currently inflicted on the average person. Something needs to be done to correct that dilemma and since we are democracies--hopefully the cure will soon be administered. Unfettered capitalism merely encourages greed and in effect leaves those toiling for their bread each day, in the dust. I have voted for Republicans in the past few elections, but will probably give a Democrat my vote next yr, if Pres Bush does not take steps to make free trade indeed fair trade for Americans. Hopefully voters in Australia will use the power of their vote to enact improvements as well.
Take care, Ann
