China pushes out 3G licenses until late 2004

SHANGHAI, China — It's looking less likely that China will issue 3G mobile network licenses anytime soon, opting instead to continue field trials of the various 3G technologies until late summer 2004.

That could be good news for a handful of communications chip makers trying to get silicon out the door for China's fledgling 3G standard — TD-SCDMA. Originally, the Chinese government had hinted that licenses could be issued as early as next spring, putting pressure on chip makers to get working silicon that could be designed into handsets.
