China's admission to the World Trade Organization has been a boon for both local and foreign electronic component distributors, but so far the intensifying competition between the two has not led to the kind of consolidation witnessed by distributors in other global markets.
WTO reforms, which began taking hold in 2001, have variously lowered or eliminated duties for many components, eased import and export restrictions, and liberalized foreign investments in Chinese companies--all of which have increased the country's procurement spend and contributed to a greater reliance on distributors.

"At first we felt a little panic, because we feared [WTO admission] would make the international distributors much stronger in the market," said Gu Wei, general manager of Shanghai Wealth Electronics Co. Ltd. "But after two years we are confident we can compete with them. The 'open door' policies have been good for us and our customers, and we have all benefited."
