POLIOMYELITIS VACCINES

ZINC SULPHATE SPRAY

In 1910, Flexner and Lewis suggested that poliovirus entered the central nervous system through the nasal mucus(1). Two years later, in 1912, Flexner and Clark administered the poliovirus on swabs into the noses of monkeys. As the virus was detected in olfactory nerve(2), Flexner interpreted the results to mean the virus gained access to the brain through the nose(3). Further experiments led to an acceptance and support for the "nasal portal of entry" and "olfactory pathway" supposition(4). In 1935, Armstrong and Harrison suggested that monkeys could be made immune from experimentally-induced polio by treating the nasal passages with chemicals and then to test these by applying the virus via the nasal passages(5). Trying to extrapolate the results from experiments on monkeys to humans led to children having their noses blocked with picric acid and zinc sulphate. In 1937, zinc sulphate spray was used during an outbreak of polio in Toronto - the spray not only failed to prevent polio but many children lost their sense of smell, some permanently(6).
