I wouldn't put too much credence in these polls. We're still a very long way from the actual caucuses at the end of January, and the Dean Machine is only going to get more powerful.

Over the past couple of weeks, Gephardt has been really focused in on Iowa. He skipped the "America Rocks the Vote" debate last week in order to do retail politics in coffee klatches across Iowa. Dean has been limiting his time in Iowa, creating more of a national campaign.

I fully expect that there will be a last minute blitz by both candidates in Iowa in January. Dean will have the money advantage, and perhaps even more of the union endorsements.

As I've said before, these polls are merely a distraction. They serve to turn political choices into horse races. This to the detriment of the citizenry's ability to actually think through policy choices. One thing that Iowa causus attendees ought to be considering is that Gephardt epitomizes that old-fashioned liberal "tax and spend" style that is so out of favor with swing voters and disgruntled Republicans. Dean is clearly superior when it comes to fiscal responsibility. Hopefully this message gets through.

BTW, John Kerry scored a first today. First Democratic candidate to use George Bush's landing on the aircraft carrier against Bush. Bravo!
