It weakens the case of those who think girls are being discriminated against in school.

There are a lot of complex reasons for how particular groups perform in school but one large relatively simple reason is how much is expected of them by their parents, teachers, and peers. If your parents don't care, or your teachers think your hopeless so they don't try hard with you, or your peers put you down if you are successfully academically, than you are less likely to perform well.

Perhaps parents expect more academically from girls then boys, or more likely perhaps good academic performance is seen as more positive by the girls peers then by the peers of boys.
