The complicating factor here is the notion that there are two (or perhaps more) individuals involved.

Tim, you assert that as though it were a fact. I hope you realize that's what you're doing.

There are two questions to be answered in dealing with this issue. One is the morality the other is the legality. We all make moral judgments. There are variances from one individual of good will to another and they act accordingly in their own lives. The second is the question of what point immoral acts should become illegal acts. To you it is clear that a person is being killed and that certainly should be illegal. I can understand that. But you have to recognize that what you assert about personhood is just your belief as well as the belief of a lot of other people. So at what point do we make it illegal? Even Bush says that the country is not ready for that.

Try looking at the process of paradigm shift to illegality from the perspective of a different issue, one not so heated. Let's say that we get a movement in the country toward ethical vegetarianism--a sizeable plurality who strongly believe that it's immoral to kill and eat a cow or a chicken. We have a strong and loud contingent of practicing vegans. We have others in the population who will eat fish and poultry and eggs but not mammals. We have others who will eat these things but only after they pray over them. At what point do we make eating animals illegal? What factors would need to exist for us to take that step? How would we go about making that happen?
