Yes, Michael, I like the way you think! And you're right--it was celebrate, not celibate, for all priests until about the fifteenth century. In fact, medieval priests were married, and had lots and lots of children. Finally, the pope, tired of supporting such huge priestly families, changed the rules and declared priests celibate. Unfortunately, instead of just being honest and saying he couldn't afford it anymore, he made a big ideologic deal about it, saying celibacy was more holy, closer to God. So now we have all those twisted souls who need brakes on deviant behavior (never effective, anyway) in the preisthood, and all those hundreds of thousands of children abused by priests popping up everywhere, in need of therapy. Not to mention tribes of third world peoples everywhere wiped out by Catholic explorers and missionaries who suddenly had more money for expeditions since the priests' families were suddenly a nonevent. Way to go! |
