Got a story under my GTE folder on the WSJ--it's about the RBOCs but concerns all local providers. Telco analysts are forecasting revenue increases in local telco for the next couple of quarters but they see competition eating into revenues by the end of next year. They say that the safe dividends and earnings growth are going to be coming to an end.

IMO they're off base--most of the local competition will be buying wholesale capacity from the telcos and, besides, by the time they get into local, the locals should be getting into LD as GTE already has.

At any rate, GTE is in less imminent danger than the RBOCs since GTE doesn't fall under Greene's consent decree and, also, GTE is getting very diversified--maybe GTE will lose some local share but I think the other businesses will more than make up for it.
