Perhaps parents expect more academically from girls then boys, or more likely perhaps good academic performance is seen as more positive by the girls peers then by the peers of boys.

I think its more than that. Boys just aren't doing the work. I see that in the classes I am taking. The guys are absent more, they daydream more in class.....they do a lot of text messaging instead of taking notes; the women are trying to take notes while the guys are trying to flirt. I know that's all anecdotal. However, on my ME midterm, I got the best grade; the next 4 best grades were all women. I was the only guy in the top 5 and I would not be surprised if I was the only guy in the top ten. These guys are recent products of our school system. Out of a class of 45, I would say there are 4 or 5 guys committed to doing well.

When I went to school.....middle school and hi school, the girls sometimes did better but the gap between girls and boys was not this dramatic. I think there has been so much emphasis on supporting girls, that the boys have become odd men out so to speak. Clearly, there is a problem. National testing shows the boys are lagging behind their female counterparts by a large margin.
