I understood boys were not doing as much work, I was speculating about why this would be the case. If expectations are lower then results may be lower. The support of girls you mention is to an extent an example of increasing expectations.

The guys might be more interested in the flirting but I think its also that they are less interested in the schoolwork. Its possible that they would still be less interested even with the same expectations but I think lower expectations are part of the problem.
