Hi, Jim! I couldn't relate to Sunday school, as much as I tried, and so have just absorbed little tidbits about the Church for years. I know there is an excellent book about the Vatican, the mob and an Italian banking scandal (sounds like a movie, doesn't it?), but I forget the name of it. Someone else here might know. A book my husband, who was definitely Catholic until recently, just finished and thought was stunning, is "The Sign and the Seal" by Graham Hancock, which goes behind the biblical legends to trace the vessel holding the stone tablets of the Ten Commandments to present-day Ethiopia. Along the way the author discusses Moses and his training by Egyptian sorcerers, which made him seem all-powerful to unsophisticated early Christians although his power was based on alchemy! Long discussion of the interrelatedness of the Freemasons, African Jews, the Holy Grail, and the political motivations of the men behind the writing of the Bible. It's a bestseller (the cover says!), and is available in paperback. |
