China's larger-than-expected thirst for oil is driving this year's growth in demand for oil, the International Energy Agency said in its latest report yesterday.

The IEA revised upward by 170,000 barrels a day to 1.28m b/d its estimate for international demand growth in 2003. China made up more than half the increase, with a revision of 90,000 b/d.

The IEA said China's net imports hit a record 2.79m barrels a day in September, up 680,000 b/d on the month. It expects Chinese imports of oil to surpass those of Japan, Asia's largest consumer, in the latter half of next year. Carola Hoyos, London
