China's youth unfit to join military
BEIJING - The Chinese military is having a hard time finding suitable recruits because modern lifestyles, including excessive drinking, have wreaked havoc on the health and fitness of the country's young.

State media reported on Wednesday that nearly half of draft-age youngsters were unqualified to be soldiers, according to information simultaneously released by several health checkup stations for conscription in Yangzhou city of eastern China's Jiangsu province.

A young employee of a company in the city, surnamed Zhang, regretted that his dream of joining the army was shattered by his constant drinking and staying up all night in the karaoke lounge.

In many other cities, such as Nanjing, Shanghai, Hangzhou, Fuzhou, Hefei and Nanchang, youths did not make the grade.
