thecow, great concern about wiping: I wonder what kind of information people who worry about wiping their HD have on it. Checking account number? [every clerk accepting my check can view that]. Credit card number? [ditto]. Social Security number? [most people carry that in their wallet, which can be lost or stolen].

We discussed the best solution here before: put that kind of personal data on removable media and lock it in a safe when not in use. Don't put it on a hard disk in the first place.
