Domtar embraces sustainable forest certification
Greenpeace congratulates Domtar and urges competitors to follow suit
TORONTO, Nov. 14 - Today, Domtar Inc. (DTC - TSX/NYSE) announced that it intends to pursue sustainable certification of all its forest operations or 9 million hectares of forests. The certification will occur according to the standards of Forest Stewardship Council standards, the only certification system supported by Greenpeace.
Less than 13% of all tenured forests are certified as sustainable in Canada. Besides Domtar and Tembec, most other major forestry companies in Canada like Abitibi-Consolidated, Bowater, Canfor, Kimberly-Clark, Kruger, Nexfor, Weyerhaueser, Weldwood, and Tolko have not taken steps to be certified as sustainable. These companies continue to devastate the Boreal forest in Canada.
"Greenpeace congratulates Domtar for their bold and progressive bid to become a wholly 'sustainably certified' company," said Richard Brooks, forest campaigner with Greenpeace. "Now it's time for Domtar's competitors to stop being laggards in forest protection and take immediate steps to match this announcement. We know that forest destruction increasingly doesn't pay in the marketplace."
Certified products are shown to be given purchasing preference by the public and many consumer companies. |
