FDR, Truman and JFK never supported the president of the other party over their own party's candidates.
Perhaps they never saw their party drifting so far off course that they felt a need to. Party loyalty ahead of principles is the problem, not something to be admired.
As for the war, Zell agreed with the reasons for going in and supported the president, and he's not about to pretend now that he didn't, just for the sake of votes from the Bush-hating left. Again, principle first.
BTW, JFK didn't beat Nixon by being a foreign policy softie. He was more of a cold-warrior hawk than nixon's boss Ike. That's one of Zell's issues with the Demo party - FDR, Truman and JFK were NOT pacifist, anti-war, anti-military, foreign policy vision-impaired wimps, but that seems to be becoming a litmus test for party loyalty these days.
PS: Notice we haven't heard much from Joe Biden lately? Seems he's also not be willing to pander to the anti-war crowd and renounce his strong support for the war. Maybe he should leave the party, too. |
