I would recommend using a hardware firewall between your network and the Internet, and forget about installing firewalls on your computers. (I like Netscreen products.)

You didn't say how you connect to the Internet. Cable? DSL? What kind of hardware makes that connection? Is it connected to your network switch (or the LinkSys) or is it hung off of one of the computers? (i.e. USB - I don't recommend this). You may have some kind of firewalling built-in. (For example, many DSL routers have firewalling of some sort or another.)

If you do install firewalls on individual computers, then you are going to have to learn enough about configuring the firewall to "poke a hole" in the firewall to allow Windows networking to pass through from your other computers - but to block it from other addresses.
