one strategy i was reading about (in Faber's letter, it was a "guest column), which sounded interesting, but probably not practical for a typical retail investor, is the purchase of credit default swaps. this guy (forget his name) had bought a lot of these on financial names for his hedge? funds, i believe. he seemed to expect them to appreciate like options, and considered them cheaper than shorting options or regular equity options.
