'Jury's out on Government' says Murdoch

[Our aussie emperor Rupert makes a pronouncement..pb]

Rupert Murdoch has put Tony Blair on notice that he could switch allegiance to the Tories at the next election.

The Prime Minister's aides have seen the media mogul's backing as crucial in achieving Labour's two landslide victories.

However, Mr Murdoch's newspaper The Sun has been more critical of the Government since he appointed Rebekah Wade editor.

And tonight he said "the jury's out" on who he will back in the election, expected in around 18 months.

"I would say that we'll have to see how the Tory front bench looks, if it looks like a viable alternative government which it hasn't so far," Mr Murdoch told BBC1's Ten O'clock News

"We will not quickly forget the courage of Tony Blair in the international sphere in the last several months. So we may be torn in our decision, but let's wait and see.

"It's a long way a way, let's see what the Government is doing with Europe, lets see how Mr Howard performs, how the Government performs."

Asked if Mr Blair still had his support he added: "Let's just say we have a friendly relationship as I do with Mr Howard, and the jury's out."

Labour reacted quickly to Mr Murdoch's remarks.

A party spokesman said: "We welcome Mr Murdoch's comments in praise of the Prime Minister's international leadership and are confident that when the next election comes the delivery of improved public services will mean that we deserve the support of News International readers."
