The People elect the Senators, not the staffers.

To be fair to the Senators, its practice on the Hill to pile on committee memberships and everything else. Congressmen and Senators have staffers to do just about everything for them, from the actual drafting of legislation, to researching issues. I wonder anymore if our representatives do much else besides showing up on the floor, voting, and run off to press some flesh.

I recall reading one freshman Congressman referring to his first day in the Capital as being like getting caught up in a tornado.
