Took 10 seconds to find that speech. Kennedy was a champion of Civil Rights. Mostly he had to keep his agenda off the front pages, because quite frankly, America was a racist country. Knowing that he needed the southern Dixiecrats to win the presidential election, Kennedy did not wade too deep into the Civil Rights Issues in public, because doing do would have been political suicide. But privately folks like Martin Luther King had his ear and his heart.

But there has been a shift in the political landscape since Kennedy won the Presidency as you know. The southern states have shifted towards the republican party. Many racists like Helms and Lott found solace in the republican party, where the democratic party became the champion of Civil rights. This has cost the dems the south in every presidential election since Kennedy. So while you might call these southern conservatives democrats, they really were a splinter group. Many called them the Dixiecrats. Now most of these folks have migrated to the republican party. They are led by Lott, Helms and David Duke and many others who are racist.

The party of Lincoln is no longer the party of Civil rights.
