I agree with you. Unfortunately that doesn't make him electable, as the electorate votes on superficial impressions and not on track record.

I recently visited a web site that matches individual political preferences with candidate positions and discovered that, after the hypothetical Libertarian candidate, who is the best match for me, my number 2 guy is Howard Dean. This puts me in the same camp as Raymond Duray, which was kind of unsettling, but illustrates Dean's careful staking out of broadly appealing political ground.
