does that imply that in order to win democrats one should pretend to be a racists? I am not making a claim about Kennedy one waty or another but your statement seems to imply that democratic party is more racist than republican since republicans did not want to or did not need to compromise.

What an impish and ignorant reply. The southern states were pretty much racist regardless of the party. Have you ever been in the south? The republicans didn't raise the issue because they did not need to. Their candidates stood for keeping blacks in their place, and so did the electorate.

The democratic party was dragging their dixiecrat counterparts into the new world. But they had to be gentle with them too, or lose their votes. It's politics, not policy.

Now the former dixiecrats have moved even further right and have found refuge in the republican party. Do you know how many black people come to democratic functions? Most racists couldn't stand it, so they moved to the predominantly white republican party. There they could continue to practice their age old white only club.

And that is where we are today. Republicans and conservatives are more racist than the general population.
