Xilinx Accelerates Virtex-II Pro Adoption With Introduction of RocketLabs In 15 Worldwide Locations

Monday November 17, 7:30 am ET

Company Delivers on Vision to Bring High Speed Serial to the Masses By Providing Free Access to State-of-the-Art Equipment, Evaluation Boards And Applications Expertise

# SAN JOSE, Calif., Nov. 17 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Xilinx, Inc. (Nasdaq: XLNX - News) today delivered on its commitment to provide a comprehensive set of high-speed serial design resources through the introduction of RocketLabs(TM), the world's first network of high-speed serial design labs. Xilinx RocketLabs provides system designers throughout the world with free access to high-speed serial design equipment, evaluation boards, applications expertise, and specialized training. With 15 locations throughout North America, Europe, Asia, and Japan, RocketLabs provide designers with the capability to evaluate and validate high-speed serial designs from 622 Mbps to 10 Gbps and beyond. The labs also provide design resources for embedded designs using Xilinx Virtex-II Pro(TM) embedded PowerPC processor and MicroBlaze soft processor core.

In related news, Xilinx today announced the delivery of the Virtex-II Pro X family, the world's first FPGA to offer embedded multi-gigabit transceivers. These highly programmable transceivers support all the industry's high-speed serial IO standards; such as 10GE, OC-48, SxI-5, TFI-5, PCI-Express, Serial RapidIO, XFP, Fibre Channel and the new UXPi specification. The new devices extend the current Virtex-II Pro family by supporting data rates up to 10.3125 Gbps. By removing perceived obstacles in the adoption of high-speed serial design, Xilinx expects to enable thousands of new designs for its Virtex-II Pro and Virtex-II ProX FPGAs. Today's announcements significantly extend the company's technology and market lead in serial connectivity.

"By providing free access to high-speed serial design equipment, expertise, and immediate delivery of silicon supporting performance up to 10 Gbps per channel, Xilinx has taken unprecedented steps in ensuring high speed serial design success for our customers" said Erich Goetting, vice president and general manager of the Advanced Products Division. "We believe the investment in this initiative to pay off in a big way with literally thousands of new design wins. Our RocketLabs infrastructure has a capacity to serve up to 14,000 customers per year."

"After seeing the RocketIO transceiver demo first hand, we were absolutely convinced we would be able to implement our design using Xilinx Rocket IO technology," said Steve Hadfield, staff technologist at Evans and Sutherland. "The information gathered during our RocketLab's visit actually enabled us to make a number of serious architectural decisions relating to our next generation computer graphics simulator design. Working with Xilinx gave us confidence that we would be able to get our project up and running on time and on budget."

Free Access to Advanced Design and Characterization Equipment

The Xilinx RocketLabs locations are fully equipped with high-speed serial test and measurement equipment from Agilent, a complete PC network, and a broad selection of Xilinx and partner development boards supporting up to 10 Gbps designs. The labs also include software tools and development boards to support embedded designs. By combining RocketLabs with leading applications expertise and customer training, Xilinx dramatically reduces development costs and design risk for its customers.

RocketLab Locations

The 15 worldwide RocketLabs locations are Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Raleigh, San Diego, Ottawa, San Jose, London, Paris, Munich, Stockholm, Milan, Tel Aviv, Shenzen, and Tokyo. All RocketLabs come equipped with Agilent 86100 high speed DCA and scope, Agilent 86112A dual electrical 20 GHz plug in module, Agilent E5904B trace port analyzer, supporting software, and multiple hardware platforms to allow evaluation of Xilinx Virtex-II Pro, Virtex-II Pro X and RocketPHY products.
