The BOJ's balance sheet already looks slightly precarious, holding more than 60 trillion yen in long-term government bonds and 1.8 trillion yen in Japanese stocks.

It has also said it would buy up to one trillion yen worth of asset-backed securities, which may include those with junk grade ratings.

Sources have said the Finance Ministry may ask the BOJ to buy its foreign bond holdings in order to raise funds for its currency market intervention.

Raise funds for intervention purposes.
