Lorne -
If the memo the Standard claims to have gotten hold of is legitimate, then I have to wonder about a couple of things.
Just two months ago, on September 17th, George W. Bush said "We've had no evidence that Saddam Hussein was involved with September the 11th." If there is such reliable intelligence linking Al Qaeda and Hussein, then why has the administration continued to make only veiled insinuations about such links?
Then there's the issue of chemical weapons. If, as reported, Al Qaeda has long held the desire to use chemical and biological weapons (which I think it's safe to assume), and has been prevented from doing so by the technological hurdles, then why didn't they just get some from Hussein, who supposedly had, at least at some point, great stockpiles of them?
Lastly, if bin Laden had reached an understanding with Hussein in the early 90's, why did he continue to make so many inflammatory statements about the secular governments in Arab countries, including Iraq specifically. I don't think it has even been a year since his last audio tape calling Hussein an "infidel", and saying that such governments had to go.
OK, one more question. If a liberal news outlet, (like Salon, for example) leaked a top secret government memo, wouldn't most of you neo-cons be screaming for their blood? I'll bet you would.
