You should be able to boot from a CD on any recently-built system (last few years).

Bootable CDs in "El Torito" format are recognized by the system BIOS or disk adapter BIOS. There are no special drivers needed. (In the case of IDE, it would be supported in your system BIOS. In the case of SCSI, it would be supported in your adapter card BIOS.)

You may have a setting in your BIOS to allow or disallow booting from a CD, and to set the order for searching for a boot device. (what to try first, what to try second, etc.)
