This is not an answer to your question but there are a number of ways to play the biotech boom. Contract research organizations (CRO's) are a great play although they too have high valuations. Many biotechs are great at drug discovery but do not have much experience in clinical trials. Moreover some choose not to create the infrastructure necessary to run trials which may involve locations all over the world. Companies such as Quinteles and Paraxel are two of the leaders in this industry.
IMHO in answer to your question on the best pick and shovel companies I believe the ones with the most potential growth are still private. Techne is very interesting however.
