If Saddam was taken out, then his regime would still have been in place. Most likely the next head of state would have been his second oldest son.

Regardless, Saddam is very good at survival. He was hard to hit. That is how he survived for so long.

If a bomb was used to take him out, then there would have been collateral damage. Nevertheless, one bomb would not have destroyed the regime. I rifle shot, with no collateral damage, was out of the question since he never let himself be seen in public (his body doubles were).

Remember that the first shot of the war were bombs they tried to kill Saddam and his sons with. They missed. Saddam is no fool. How do you think he got into power in the first place?
