Are most conservative republicans homophobic?

I don't think they fall into a single category.

Some, like Jesse Helms, Matt Drudge, and Rush Limbaugh are, I believe, self loathing for their own sexual preferences and tendancies. Others have been molested in their youth. Some blame homosexuals for angering their god and delaying the rapture. The majority, I think, are just trying to get a rise of passion that comes from having someone else to oppress.
