The new Turkish PM, Recep Erdogan, was originally denied his premiership despite having won a landslide election in November '02, because he read an Islamist poem in public. He was later made PM when the law changed. Is he an Islamist? I think it likely, since his political affiliation is with an Islamist party.

I thought originally that the recent Turkish bombings might be a mistake on AQ's part. I no longer think so. Turkey appears to be just as infested with militant Islamists as any other country in the area. The bombings may therefore be perceived as appropriate measures to be taken against enemies, instead of as affronts to democracy, as I originally thought.

As far as the Brits, I think the bombings will steel their resolve. We may see more public support for Bush's policies than we have seen before.
