Now if only the analysts would do some research and take notice of other not-so-well-known companies in the same sector! Another dismal day on the market can't stop Ciena The market tanked again Tuesday, but optical networking stocks kept chugging along. Ciena (CIEN) jumped 6 percent after Thomas Weisel analyst Hasan Imam upgraded both it and rival Sycamore Networks to ""outperform." The analyst had rated the stocks "peer perform" and "underperform," respectively. Imam believes that the sector is finally set to grow in 2004 after having shrunk for several years. In fact, he predicts growth of between 10 and 15 percent next year. That would indeed be a feat, but investors have to remember that these stocks have valuations that price in even higher growth than that. Imam acknowledges that these stocks' valuations remain stretched, but argues that a rebounding industry can lead to higher multiples.
