Not to worry, Maurice. Hu Jintao is just trying, in his heavy-handed way, to influence the upcoming elections in Taiwan.

Like the U.S. in Iraq, China has "national interests at stake" in Taiwan, and feels they have the right to use "all available means" to "defend" their "rights" in their "sphere of influence". "Defend", in this case, means the opposite of what the dictionary says.

The polite and civilized way to control distant lands, is to buy their politicians. That's what the oil and timber companies do in Alaska. Works much better than putting a nervous 19-year-old with an automatic weapon on every street-corner.
